Bush was, like, stupid or something

I think I know part of the reason why young people say “like” so much – they don’t like to claim they’re quoting when they’re only paraphrasing. Newspapers have no such inhibitions. Now Mr. Bush is known for saying dumb things, but the Province paper here in B.C. apparently felt the need to sex it up (today, page A21). Here’s what they said he said:

[his administration will] never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people.

They lack shame. A few lines down they provide a more accurate quote (or so I must assume):

Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.

Yup, still dumb. But you know, I would trust them more if they used “like”.
